The Aragonite stone ( a.k.a. the tufa or tchazar crystal) was first discovered in 1788 on the Aragon River, Spain. It is a carbonated metamorphic rock found in stalactites, around natural hot springs or coming from the encrustations from cave interiors. It can also be found in the mother-of-pearl lining of mollusk shells. It is secreted by the mantle tissue of mollusks making up the layers of nacre that the oyster uses to create the pearl itself. Some Native American tribes use the multiple thin layers of Aragonite from the abalone shell to smudge sage creating hues of pearl-like luster. Its ancient fossilizing qualities are key factor in the preservation of many shell, snail and coral fossils due to soluble calcium-like properties. Over time, the Aragonite will re-crystallize into a more stable form of Calcite to preserve the harden materials beautifully for millennia. Its orthorhombic crystal structure acts like a prism reflecting its three triangular sides. This prismatic, or rather “orient" quality in pearls breaks light into a diffracted spectrum of shimmering color due to the many thousands of layers of Aragonite coating the pearl. The most famous and best quality of Aragonite comes from Karlsbad, Czechoslovakia, which has been known for its medicinal sulfur springs since the 14th century. It's also found in France, UK, Austria, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Namibia, Poland and the U.S.A.
