There are many different kinds of Tiger’s Eye and each carries their own properties. There’s Falcon’s Eye, Tiger’s Eye, Hawk’s Eye, Ox Eye, Tiger Iron, Gold Tiger’s Eye, Red Tiger’s Eye and Blue Tiger’s Eye. Most specimens have additional colors such as gold, red, and brown because it‘s the transition point between Hawk’s Eye turning into Tiger’s Eye. Tiger's-eye is chatoyant (showing a band of bright reflected light caused by aligned inclusions in the stone particularly when polished and is moved back and forth in light). It is a quartz gemstone formed when fibers of the mineral Crocidolite (a fibrous blue or green mineral consisting of a Silicate of Iron and Sodium; blue asbestos) are replaced by Silica. The structure of the parallel fibers is preserved in the stone and the reflective banding crosses the parallel fibers at right angles. Tiger Iron is an altered rock composed chiefly of Tiger's eye, Red Jasper and Black Hematite. The contrasting bands of color and luster create an attractive pattern that’s composed chiefly of silicon dioxide and iron oxide. Tiger Iron is used mainly for jewelry, ornaments, beads and knife hilts as well as a variety of other uses. It’s mined primarily in South Africa and Western Australia. Arizonan and Californian Tiger-eye are actually Serpentine deposits found in Arizona and California that have chatoyant bands of Chrysotile fibers (a form of asbestos). Blue Tiger’s Eye is formed when the same mineral Crocidolite, which is blue in color, is replaced by Silica and the natural Crocodolite fibers within the stone have yet to be fully crystallized into Limonite. The color is usually a dark blue and tends to be incredibly chatoyant. Blue Tiger's Eye is typically found in South Africa and is considered rare. Tiger Eye's magnetism gleams in deeply banded golden yellow hues depending on the levels of iron deposits during the stone's formation.

Tiger’s Eye is such a good natured and protective stone that it acts like a sponge and is always soaking up energies and vibrations, working to curate a calm and positive environment. This means that it needs to be cleansed often. It needs to be cleansed particularly after heavy energy situations. Being a form of quartz, Tiger’s Eye is quite durable and resilient but it is sensitive to acids in some common household cleaners and solvents. Avoid bleach, ammonia and sulfuric acid. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are generally safe for quartzes--even pseudo-morph quartzes but be cautious when using steamers due to possibilities of color shifts from the heat.
